Understanding Impacts

We understand that the impact of an increase in global average temperatures could cause changes in weather patterns, resulting in more severe and more frequent natural disasters such as forest fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and storm surges.

This impact may increase disease incidence and severity, food and water supplies, and the general health of impacted populations. Such climate change trends are expected to continue into the future and may impact nearly all sectors of the economy to varying degrees.

Active Monitoring

Climate change is actively monitored. While the long-term impacts of climate change for the company and our clients are unknown, climate change impacts are part of the ongoing monitoring of RGA’s emerging experience for anything that might change underlying mortality and morbidity trends.

Also, scenario reviews and planning are undertaken for various climate change-related events. RGA considers the potential effects of climate change in our ORSA and enterprise risk management processes, which inform our business strategy.

Offsetting Emissions

With the aid of Cloverly, a certified carbon offset company, RGA is working to reduce the company's carbon footprint by funding verified CO2-saving projects around the world. These can involve decarbonizing electricity grids, improving energy efficiency, reforestation, or reducing deforestation. Learn more about how two RGA-funded projects are having a positive impact on the planet.

S&J Taylor Forest Carbon Project

The S&J Taylor Forest Carbon Project balances conservation of nearly 18,000 forested acres of Saline River bottoms riparian hardwoods and  “working” pines in south-central Arkansas. Diverse oak, gum, cypress, hickory, and pine forests located within the Gulf Coastal Plain eco-region represent important habitat and provide essential buffers that abate sedimentation and nutrient runoff between development and waterways.  Learn More

Recycling Roadways for Carbon Emission Reductions

Global Emissionairy works to reduce the carbon footprint of the paving industry through a cradle-to-installation roadway reconstruction life cycle that significantly reduces energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions, preserves natural resources, and reduces waste and related landfill disposal. Sustainability Governance

We have a responsibility to monitor and control our environmental and societal impact and adopt responsible practices on sustainability issues. RGA strives to operate in a sustainable manner that recognizes the need for strong governance, effective management systems, and robust controls embedded within our business operations and long-term strategies.

  • The RGA Board of Directors oversees sustainability issues and delegates oversight of relevant issues to its committees. In 2023, the Board assigned the Nominating and Governance Committee the primary responsibility of supporting the Board in its oversight of sustainability issues and coordinating with other committees as needed. The Board also strengthened its data security oversight by transitioning a subcommittee to a new full Board committee, the Cybersecurity and Technology Committee, to oversee RGA’s cybersecurity, data privacy, and technology risks.
  • As a whole and through each of its standing committees, the Board and Executive Committee collectively provide active oversight of RGA’s sustainability strategy. At a management level, RGA’s Sustainability Leadership Committee develops, champions, and advises on our overall sustainability strategy, policies, and initiatives. This committee comprises more than a dozen leaders from all major functions and office locations. These leaders are well-positioned to integrate and oversee sustainable business practices across our global operations.
